The other day I had to sit in the waiting room of our new dentist for about 20 minutes. My goodness what a dump! It made me and my youngest son cringe- glad to see his reaction, he may be an upcoming interior designer! So, whilst waiting we discussed what we might do by way of a mental makeover to transform the room....... click here for ideas >>>>>>>>
Description of waiting room.
The dentists' surgery is an Edwardian house (approx) with a 1970's extension in the forms of coloured pods. The interior was probably updated at that time complete with smoked glass screens, and plastic green chairs, the front doors and any steps are held together with yellow sticky tape!. It really needs knocking down! - But we cannot fault the dentists expertise and the care they give so this shall be in the form of a mental makeover (I might produce some sketches and ideas to them in due course).
So, the waiting room is behind a smoked glass screen opposite the reception desk. There are approximately 16 green plastic chairs all around the walls. A false ceiling with inset fluorescent lighting panels, broken venetian blinds in the west facing bay window, an incredibly misplaced painting of a forest framed in a heavy gilt frame (good idea in having something to focus on, just too small and wrong style) - adjacent to this there is an oval bevelled glass mirror in a maroon high gloss frame all beneath exposed pipes and an extractor fan - complete wih holes from someones previous attempts to hang pictures. Oh yes, and not to forget the chinese style pink rug beneath two plastic black and green tables. Apart from this the carpet is in reasonable condition and is a contract weight in a non-descript beige.
So what are our interior design deas?
Well putting aside demolishing the whole place.....
And assuming there was very little money to spend...we would firstly check how many actual seats were needed at any one given time - sure they don't need 17! Then arrange for the plastic chairs to be sold on ebay along with the plactic tables, chinese rug, painting and mirror.
We would instantly change the feel of the room by turning off the fluorescent ceiling lights and install 1970's style table lamps in each corner of the room including the bay window. This image is from the Lin/Weiberg gallery just to give you the idea of style - I think Ikea do something similar.
But hey - this would make a great project to work on at my interior design workshops! So I won't say any more - come and design it yourself! And see our ideas too!
